Leaking When You Sneeze (Postpartum)

It's common. It's not normal. And it's very, very fixable — usually without a single kegel.

If you leak a little when you sneeze, cough, laugh, jump, or run — you have stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Somewhere between 30–50% of postpartum women deal with it, and most are told it's a normal part of motherhood. It isn't. It's a signal that your pelvic floor and your pressure system aren't working together. Here's what's really going on and the OT plan that stops it.

Why kegels alone often fail

A sneeze creates a huge, sudden downward burst of pressure into your abdomen. Your pelvic floor has to react in a fraction of a second. If the muscle is weak that's a problem — but if the muscle is TIGHT (which is far more common postpartum), it can't respond fast either. Squeezing a muscle that's already gripping just makes it worse. About half of postpartum women who leak actually have overactive, guarded pelvic floors — and kegels make their symptoms worse.

The 4 things that actually stop leaking

The 'knack' — a small, quick pelvic floor lift a beat before you sneeze, cough, or lift — cuts leaking dramatically for most women within a week. It's the single highest-yield habit you can build.

The good news

Stress incontinence responds beautifully to pelvic floor therapy — most women see major changes in 4–6 sessions. You don't have to plan your life around a bathroom. In-home OT means we assess how you actually move, breathe, and pick up your baby in your real space — not on a gym mat under fluorescent lights.
