Return to Running After Baby

A staged checklist (based on the 2019 Goom et al. guidelines) to get you back on the road without leaking, pain, or setbacks.

Six weeks postpartum is when many providers 'clear you for exercise.' Running is not exercise — it's impact loading at 2.5–3x your bodyweight per step, on one leg, for thousands of reps. The current best evidence recommends waiting at least 12 weeks postpartum and meeting specific load-tolerance milestones first.

Before you run: pass these tests

Do each in sequence. If anything causes pain, leaking, or heaviness — stop and rehab that piece before progressing.

Symptoms that mean 'not yet': any urinary leakage, heaviness/dragging in the pelvis, pain at the pelvis, low back, or C-section scar, or doming of the abdomen.

Weeks 1–4 of running: walk-run intervals

Weeks 4–8: extend the runs

Beyond 8 weeks: layer in intensity

Once you have a 30-minute easy run base with zero symptoms, you can start adding strides, hills, or tempo work — one variable at a time.
